Cold showers.

You can take them, like them, or get sick of other people talking about the benefits of doing them. Read on for the beautiful parallel between cold showers and cashflow forecasting.

I tried cold showers five years ago. A friend said "Yeah, yeah, just get in, turn on the shower, get in under the cold water and the hot water will come through in 30-40 seconds. And that's plenty just to get the benefits."

I tried this. Didn't enjoy it at all. So, not surprisingly, I stopped doing it.

Around a year and a half ago, I got reminded of the benefits of cold showers. But instead of getting straight into the cold water, I had a shower as normal and at the end I just turned the temperature right down.

I shared this experience with a couple of friends and one of them said, "Yeah, the Wim Hof Method."

"The Wim Hof Method!?"

I Googled ‘Wim Hof Method’. Sure enough, Wim Hof, The Iceman came up. His method is to have your shower and at the end drop the temperature from hot to cold. Great minds, I say.

It’s doable. It’s still a shock to the system – cold but no flinch! And 10 seconds becomes 20, becomes 30, and suddenly you’re up to a minute.

I'm not going to be all evangelical about taking cold showers, but if you want to give it a go, I happily and totally recommend the Wim Hof Method. The benefits are massive. I won't talk about it more here, you can Google it.

Back to cashflow forecasting and the parallel. Many people will harp on about the benefits of cashflow forecasting, including me.

Many startup founders start doing cashflow forecasts. But it’s just painful and time consuming. And not surprisingly, what do they do? They stop.

So, maybe it's just the method.

I developed a method of cashflow forecasting that every business I work with uses. It’s a simple process, a quick on-screen-review, the CEO knows what the cashflow is doing for the next 60 days, and knows what to do about it if something is wrong. We do it before every mid month and at the end of month payment runs.

Just like the Wim Hof Method, you might feel a shock to the system the first time you do or see a cashflow forecast – but you get through it. As a repeat process, you can do your cashflow forecast every 15 days with no pain or discomfort.

So, whether it’s cold showers, cashflow forecasting or indeed many other things in life… the method is super important. Of course, you have choices – so choose a method which you enjoy and benefits your (or your business’) health and wellbeing.
